FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Twi

Twi is a tonal language with four tones (high, low, mid, and falling). Tones are essential, they can completely change the meaning of a word. But with a native teacher correcting tones in real time, your ear adapts progressively. Many learners from the Ghanaian diaspora already have an intuitive grasp of the tones through family exposure, our lessons formalize that instinct.
There are two main variants of Twi. Asante Twi, spoken in Kumasi and the Ashanti Region, is the most widespread and considered the standard. Akuapem is spoken in the Eastern Region of Ghana and is historically tied to the first Bible translation into Twi. Both are mutually intelligible. Our courses teach Asante Twi, which is the most widely spoken variant in the global diaspora.
The global Ghanaian diaspora is estimated at 3 million people, with significant concentrations in the UK, the United States, Germany, and France. In France, the Ghanaian community is active in music (the Parisian Afrobeats scene), commerce, and cultural associations. Speaking Twi with a Ghanaian instantly creates an exceptional connection, Ghanaians take deep pride in their language and culture.
Yes, it is one of the best methods. Sarkodie, widely regarded as Africa's top rapper, raps primarily in Twi with a sprinkling of English. Black Sherif has conquered African and international charts with a blend of Twi, Hausa, and English. Stonebwoy and Amaarae use Twi across their dancehall and Afrobeats productions. Our teachers can build lessons around the lyrics of your favorite artists.
For a French speaker, 8 to 12 months with regular lessons is enough to reach B1. Twi uses the Latin alphabet, which simplifies reading. The main challenges: the tones (four to master), the vocabulary with no common roots with European languages, and the gap between formal Twi (standard Asante) and Accra slang (heavily influenced by English). That said, oral progress comes quickly with regular practice.

C

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

D

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

S

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

A

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

E

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
