Is Italian easy to learn for English speakers?

Italian is one of the most accessible foreign languages for English speakers, thanks to a large stock of shared Latin-based vocabulary. Pronunciation is remarkably regular, in Italian, each letter is almost always pronounced the same way, with very few exceptions. The grammar has a few subtleties (the choice between 'essere' and 'avere' in compound tenses, the subjunctive, two different verbs for 'to know') but remains logical. What are the differences between Northern and Southern Italian?

Italian regional accents are among the most distinctive in Europe.
