Learn Kinyarwanda with real humans

Kinyarwanda is the national language of Rwanda, spoken by nearly all of the country's 14 million citizens, as well as by millions of people in eastern DR Congo and Uganda. Rwanda is one of the most remarkable transformation stories in the world: from the devastating 1994 genocide, it has become in just 30 years one of the cleanest, best-governed and most dynamic countries in Africa. Kigali, the capital, is a model of urban planning and technology for the entire continent. Learning Kinyarwanda is stepping into this extraordinary renaissance.

Did you know? Rwanda is the only African country where women hold the majority of parliamentary seats (over 60% since 2008, an absolute world record). The national day 'Umuganda' (the last Saturday of every month) is devoted to community work, the whole country cleans, repairs and builds together. It is an ancestral practice, reinterpreted for the modern era, that partly explains why Kigali is one of the cleanest capitals in Africa. Kinyarwanda has a defining proverb: 'Akebo k'urukundo gafata ingabo', love's basket can carry shields, expressing love's capacity to bear even the heaviest burdens.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Kinyarwanda

Kinyarwanda, like all Bantu languages, uses a noun class system, but rather than two genders (masculine/feminine) as in French, it has 8 classes that group nouns by category (people, animals, objects, abstractions, and so on). Each class has its own prefix and agreement rules. It is more complex in theory but highly logical in practice: you can often predict a word's class from its meaning. Our teachers introduce the classes progressively through everyday vocabulary.
Rwanda is one of the fastest-growing economies in Africa, with annual growth of 8 to 10%. Kigali attracts heavy investment in tech, fintech, tourism and services. Rwanda hosts numerous international organisation headquarters (UNECA, among others) and regularly holds global conferences. Speaking Kinyarwanda in Rwanda is seen as an extraordinary sign of respect, very few expatriates attempt it, which makes the effort all the more memorable.
Effectively yes, Kinyarwanda (Rwanda) and Kirundi (Burundi) are mutually intelligible to about 90% and are often considered two variants of a single language, sometimes called Rwanda-Rundi. The differences are comparable to those between Castilian Spanish and Portuguese, recognisable but understandable. Learning one gives you access to the other with very little additional effort.
The Rwandan diaspora in France is estimated at 15,000 to 25,000 people, an active, generally well-integrated community, with cultural associations and Franco-Rwandan businesses. For social workers, doctors, lawyers and asylum professionals working with this community, a few basics of Kinyarwanda make interactions significantly easier. Franco-Rwandan ties are historically complex, but the official reconciliation of 2024 opens a new era.
With its noun class grammar, Kinyarwanda is classified as moderately difficult. For an English speaker, expect 8 to 12 months with two lessons per week to reach a conversational B1 level. The advantage: it is written in the Latin alphabet, the spelling is phonetic, and the online learner community is growing rapidly. Travellers preparing for a mission in Rwanda can learn the basic formulas in 6 to 8 weeks.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
