Is the Greek alphabet difficult to learn?

The Greek alphabet has 24 letters and can be learned in 1 to 2 weeks of regular practice. Several letters resemble Latin letters or are already familiar to scientists (alpha, beta, gamma, delta, pi, sigma, omega). Once the alphabet is mastered, Modern Greek pronunciation is very regular, each letter has an almost fixed sound, which makes reading accessible within the first few weeks.

Are Ancient Greek and Modern Greek very different?

They share the same alphabet and a significant amount of common vocabulary, but Ancient Greek (Classical, the era of Plato and Aristotle) is a distinct language from Modern Greek. A contemporary Greek can read and broadly understand a text by Plato with effort, much as an English speaker can read Middle English. In our courses, we teach Modern Greek (Dimotiki), the language spoken today. Antiquity enthusiasts can then branch into Classical Greek.

Understanding Greek means decoding the roots of thousands of scientific, medical and philosophical words in English and French. For medical, legal or academic professions, Greek roots are everywhere. Is Cypriot Greek very different from the Greek of Greece?

Cypriot Greek is mutually intelligible with Standard Greek but has archaic features, its own expressions and a distinctive accent. Cypriots perfectly understand the Standard Greek taught in schools and used in the media, but among themselves they often use the Cypriot dialect, which has also absorbed Turkish words (Cyprus has two communities). At Targumi, we teach Standard Athenian Greek, which is understood everywhere.

How can I learn Greek for travel in the Greek islands?

A 6 to 8-week module is enough to acquire the basics for travel in Greece: greetings, ordering in restaurants (taverna), bargaining, directions, ferry transport and island-hopping.
