Did you know? Thai is a tonal language with 5 tones, the same syllable pronounced with a different tone can completely change its meaning. 'Maa' can mean dog, to come, horse, or to have (depending on the tone). The Thai alphabet is an abugida derived from Sanskrit, 44 consonants, 32 vowels and 4 tone marks. Are Thai tones really essential?

Tones are essential in Thai, it's a fundamental difference from non-tonal languages. Mispronouncing a tone can cause misunderstandings or awkward (even embarrassing) situations. The good news: only 5 tones (vs. 4 in Mandarin), and with regular oral practice alongside a native speaker, the reflexes come naturally. Do I need to learn the Thai alphabet to get by?
