Are Welsh consonant mutations really that complicated?

Mutations are one of the most surprising aspects of Welsh, the same word can begin with different consonants depending on its grammatical context (after certain words, 'b' becomes 'f', 'p' becomes 'b', 'c' becomes 'g'…). There are three types of mutation. At first it is disconcerting, but native speakers use them instinctively. Our teachers introduce the most frequent mutations first, the ones you will hear in 80% of conversations.

Is there really a Welsh-speaking community in Argentina?

Yes, Y Wladfa, founded in 1865 in Patagonia by Welsh emigrants fleeing British assimilation, still has several thousand speakers of Patagonian Welsh. The Patagonian dialect has diverged slightly from the Welsh spoken in Wales but remains mutually intelligible. It is one of the most fascinating stories in world linguistic history, a Celtic language surviving on the pampas of South America.

How are the letter combinations 'll' and 'dd' pronounced in Welsh?

To produce it: place your tongue in the 'l' position, open the sides slightly and blow. The 'dd' is a voiced 'th' as in the English word 'this'. These two sounds are the phonetic signature of Welsh. How long does it take to hold a conversation in Welsh?

Welsh is classed as a difficult language for English speakers (the mutations, the pronunciation) but moderately difficult for anyone with experience in European languages.
