Learn Welsh with real humans

Welsh is a language spoken by native communities worldwide. Welsh (Cymraeg) is one of the most vibrant Celtic languages in Europe, with more than 900,000 speakers in Wales and a surprising presence in Patagonia (Argentina), where a Welsh community founded in 1865 still speaks the language. Co-official with English in Wales, Welsh is taught in every Welsh school and has enjoyed a remarkable revival since the 1960s. Its system of initial consonant mutations (words change their first letter depending on context) is its most disorienting and fascinating grammatical feature.

Did you know? Welsh has a word with no exact English or French equivalent: 'hiraeth', a melancholy longing, a feeling of homesickness for something you may never find again, often tied to a lost homeland or bygone era. The Eisteddfod, the annual festival of Welsh poetry and music, is Europe's oldest continuous cultural tradition, it has existed since 1176. And the world's longest narrow-gauge steam railway? It runs between Welshpool and Llanfair Caereinion, in Welsh, of course.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Welsh

Mutations are one of the most surprising aspects of Welsh, the same word can begin with different consonants depending on its grammatical context (after certain words, 'b' becomes 'f', 'p' becomes 'b', 'c' becomes 'g'…). There are three types of mutation. At first it is disconcerting, but native speakers use them instinctively. Our teachers introduce the most frequent mutations first, the ones you will hear in 80% of conversations.
Yes, Y Wladfa, founded in 1865 in Patagonia by Welsh emigrants fleeing British assimilation, still has several thousand speakers of Patagonian Welsh. The Patagonian dialect has diverged slightly from the Welsh spoken in Wales but remains mutually intelligible. It is one of the most fascinating stories in world linguistic history, a Celtic language surviving on the pampas of South America.
For deep cultural integration, Wales is a distinct nation with a strong identity. Speaking Welsh opens doors that stay closed to English speakers: the Welsh-speaking rural communities of the north and west, the pubs and rugby clubs where Welsh dominates, jobs in the Welsh administration (many require Welsh), and Welsh-language media (S4C, BBC Radio Cymru). Welsh is a sign of respect and belonging.
The Welsh 'll' is one of the language's most iconic sounds, a voiceless lateral fricative that exists in no other Western European language. To produce it: place your tongue in the 'l' position, open the sides slightly and blow. The 'dd' is a voiced 'th' as in the English word 'this'. These two sounds are the phonetic signature of Welsh. Our native teachers dedicate time to mastering them from the very first lessons.
Welsh is classed as a difficult language for English speakers (the mutations, the pronunciation) but moderately difficult for anyone with experience in European languages. With two lessons a week, 6 to 9 months is enough to hold a basic daily conversation. The Welsh Duolingo course is excellent as a supplement. Welsh has the advantage of being phonetic, you pronounce exactly what is written, once the rules are known.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
