Learn Tamazight (Berber) with real humans

Tamazight (Berber) is the language of North Africa's indigenous peoples, the Berbers (Imazighen), who lived there long before the Arab and Phoenician conquests. Spoken by 25 to 35 million people across Morocco, Algeria, Libya, Tunisia and an active European diaspora, Tamazight has been co-official in Morocco since 2011 and recognized in Algeria since 2016. It is also the heritage language of millions of Europeans of Kabyle, Chleuh or Rifian descent, one of the strongest cultural identities in Western Europe's immigrant communities.

Did you know? Tifinagh is one of the oldest alphabets in the world, its origins go back more than 2,500 years, and its direct ancestor (Libyco-Berber) is related to the Phoenician and Punic scripts. Kabyle Algeria has produced globally recognized cultural figures: the singer Idir (author of 'A Vava Inouva,' the most famous Kabyle song in the world), the philosopher and writer Kateb Yacine, and millions of members of an extremely active diaspora in France. Yennayer (January 12), the Berber New Year, has been an official public holiday in Algeria since 2018. Moroccan Berber rugs, with their thousand-year-old geometric patterns, are now collector's items around the world.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Tamazight (Berber)

Tamazight isn't a single language but a family of dialects. The three main ones are Kabyle (7 million speakers, mostly in Kabyle Algeria and the European diaspora), Tachelhit (8 million, southern Morocco), and Tarifit (5 million, northern Morocco/Rif region). For the North African diaspora in Europe, Kabyle is often the most useful. For business or tourism in Morocco, Tachelhit is the strategic choice.
Absolutely. Millions of Europeans of Kabyle, Rifian or Chleuh origin have Tamazight as their heritage language, even if many no longer speak it fluently. For descendants of the diaspora, learning Tamazight is often a profound journey of reclaiming cultural identity. Our 'heritage learner' courses are specifically adapted for these profiles.
Modern Tifinagh (standardized by IRCAM in Morocco) has 33 letters, all consonants, vowels are added as diacritic signs or inferred from context (similar to Arabic). It's a geometric alphabet built from circles, lines and dots, very distinctive and easy to recognize. Most learners can read basic letters within 3 to 4 weeks. For everyday conversation, you can start with Latin transliteration.
Partially. A Kabyle speaker and a Moroccan Tachelhit speaker share basic grammatical structures but will encounter many vocabulary differences, similar to a Spaniard and a Romanian who share Latin roots but can't easily understand each other. Intelligibility is higher between geographically close variants. A standard Tamazight (AMZ) is now taught in schools in Morocco and Algeria to help unify the variants.
For an English or French speaker, expect 8 to 12 months with two classes per week to reach B1. Berber grammar differs from both European and Arabic grammar, verbs conjugate using prefixes and suffixes, and gender is marked differently. The upside: the Latin alphabet is widely used to transcribe Tamazight in informal contexts (texting, social media), which makes everyday communication easier.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
