Learn Moore with real humans

Moore is a language spoken by native communities worldwide. Mooré (More) is the language of the Mossi people, about 15 million speakers, the largest ethnic group in Burkina Faso, representing over 40% of the national population. A Gur (Voltaic) language, Mooré is the informal lingua franca of Burkina Faso, spoken far beyond the Mossi alone. Ouagadougou, the capital, is entirely Mooré-speaking in its daily life. The Mossi people founded organized kingdoms as early as the 12th century, the Nayiri (Mossi kingdoms) resisted invasions by the Songhai Empire and survived until French colonization.

Did you know? The Naam, the Mossi royal institution, is one of the best-organized traditional political systems in West Africa. The Mogho Naba ('the king of the world') of Ouagadougou is the supreme leader of the Mossi and still plays a mediating role in modern political crises. Every Friday, the Naam ceremony takes place at the royal palace, a public ritual open to visitors, symbolizing the continuity of 800 years of royal tradition. FESPACO in Ouagadougou is the largest African film festival in the world, and the street conversations throughout the event take place in Mooré.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Moore

Mooré is tonal with a relatively regular tone system. As in many West African languages, tones distinguish words, but sentence context helps considerably with comprehension. Mooré also uses a noun class system (somewhat like French gender, but broader in scope) that affects agreement. Our native teachers teach tones naturally through commonly repeated expressions.
Absolutely, and increasingly so. Despite the complex security situation since 2015, many NGOs, international organizations, and companies remain present in Burkina. French is sufficient in institutional settings, but in communities, markets, villages, and any field work, Mooré is the language of trust. For humanitarians, journalists, and researchers active in the country, it is a valuable and rare skill.
The Burkinabè community in France is estimated at 80,000 to 100,000 people, the majority of Mossi origin. Mooré is spoken in homes, associations, and places of worship within the Burkinabè diaspora. For social workers and professionals in contact with this community, or for French nationals of Burkinabè origin wishing to maintain ties with their families, learning Mooré is a deeply appreciated step.
No, Mooré belongs to the Gur (Voltaic) family, while Dyula belongs to the Mandé family. These two families are distinct, with no direct kinship, despite their geographic coexistence in Burkina Faso. A Mooré speaker has no particular advantage in learning Dyula, and vice versa. However, in daily life in Ouagadougou, the two languages coexist, and many Burkinabè are multilingual.
With SVO grammar, a noun class system, and tones, Mooré is rated moderately difficult. For a French or English speaker, 6 to 9 months with 2 classes per week for basic conversations. The Latin alphabet used for written Mooré is an advantage, no new alphabet to learn. Greeting formulas and politeness expressions, fundamental in Mossi culture, are learned quickly and make an immediate impact.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
