Hungarian is rated 4-5 out of 5 for difficulty. The main challenges: the many grammatical cases (18+), a different sentence structure and the absence of cognates with Indo-European languages. But the alphabet is Latin and phonetic, and the grammar is logical without exceptions, once the rules are understood, they apply systematically. The key: a progressive approach in logical blocks rather than rote memorisation.

Finnish and Hungarian belong to the same Finno-Ugric family, but they have diverged for 3,000 to 4,000 years, they are as different from each other as English and Persian (which also share a common Indo-European ancestor). That said, learning Hungarian builds a sensitivity to agglutinative languages (Turkish, Finnish, Estonian) that makes them easier to pick up later.
Hungary attracts massive foreign investment, Samsung, BMW, Mercedes and Audi all operate major plants there. Budapest is the region's financial hub. For expats settling in Hungary, Hungarian is necessary for integration, for dealing with local authorities and for accessing positions that are not in English.
In Hungarian, the family name precedes the given name: 'Bartók Béla' (Béla Bartók in Western order), 'Liszt Ferenc' (Franz Liszt). It is a legacy of Hungarian sentence structure, which places the most important element first. In international contexts, Hungarians adapt to the Western convention, but in Hungary, surname-first is the norm, an important cultural detail to know.
In Budapest and in large international companies, English is widely spoken. But as soon as you leave for secondary cities or interact with Hungarians aged 50 and over, German is sometimes more useful than English, and Hungarian is often indispensable. For real integration, building friendships, negotiating rents or dealing with local authorities, Hungarian is the key.
