Is Hungarian really one of the most difficult languages in the world?

Hungarian is rated 4-5 out of 5 for difficulty. The main challenges: the many grammatical cases (18+), a different sentence structure and the absence of cognates with Indo-European languages. Is Hungarian related to Finnish?

In international contexts, Hungarians adapt to the Western convention, but in Hungary, surname-first is the norm, an important cultural detail to know.

Can I get by in English in Hungary without learning Hungarian?

In Budapest and in large international companies, English is widely spoken. But as soon as you leave for secondary cities or interact with Hungarians aged 50 and over, German is sometimes more useful than English, and Hungarian is often indispensable. For real integration, building friendships, negotiating rents or dealing with local authorities, Hungarian is the key.
