Dioula and Bambara are very close, about 85-90% mutually intelligible. They both belong to the Mandé sub-family. Bambara is the Malian variant (and that of Bamako), Dioula is the Ivorian and Burkinabé variant. In practice, learning one allows you to communicate with speakers of the other with very little adaptation. Dioula has incorporated more French words due to the Ivorian context.
