Did you know? Bahasa Indonesia is a constructed language, it was officially adopted as the national language in 1945 at independence, based on commercial Malay. Its great strength: it was deliberately simplified to be accessible to speakers of highly diverse linguistic backgrounds (Indonesia has more than 700 local languages). The result: no grammatical gender, no tense-based conjugation (time is indicated by words like 'kemarin' = yesterday, 'besok' = tomorrow), and a phonetic Latin alphabet. It is probably the most accessible Asian language for a European learner.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Indonesian

Indonesian is ranked at level 2 out of 5 for difficulty by the Foreign Service Institute, one of the most accessible Asian languages for Europeans. No tones (unlike Thai or Vietnamese), a phonetic Latin alphabet, no grammatical gender, no complex conjugation. The main challenges are the prefix/suffix system that modifies word meaning, and vocabulary (few cognates with European languages). But the core grammar is genuinely simple.
Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and Malay (Bahasa Melayu) are very close and mutually intelligible at around 80-90%. Both descend from commercial Malay, which was the lingua franca of Southeast Asia for centuries. The main differences are in vocabulary (Dutch loanwords for Indonesian, English for Malay), some expressions, and the spelling of certain words. An Indonesian speaker can communicate without issue with a Malaysian or a Singaporean.
Indonesia is the 7th largest economy in the world by PPP GDP and the largest economy in Southeast Asia. Jakarta is the ASEAN hub for many industries (textiles, natural resources, tech, finance). English is not widely spoken outside major international companies, speaking Indonesian is a significant competitive advantage for businesses and individuals targeting this market of 270 million consumers.
Standard Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) is understood everywhere. But in Bali, Balinese is the local language and Indonesian is coloured by Balinese influences. In Jakarta and Java, Javanese sometimes influences vocabulary and expressions. 'Bahasa gaul' (Jakarta urban slang) is very different from formal Indonesian, our teachers cover both registers depending on your goal.
Yes, Arabic has heavily influenced Indonesian vocabulary, particularly in religious, ethical, and everyday domains: 'maaf' (sorry, from Arabic), 'selamat' (congratulations / hello, from 'salamat'), 'insya Allah' (God willing), 'alhamdulillah' (thank God). These Arabic loanwords account for around 10-15% of everyday vocabulary. Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world, with a tradition of moderate and tolerant Islam.
