Is Indonesian really easy to learn?

Indonesian is ranked at level 2 out of 5 for difficulty by the Foreign Service Institute, one of the most accessible Asian languages for Europeans. No tones (unlike Thai or Vietnamese), a phonetic Latin alphabet, no grammatical gender, no complex conjugation. The main challenges are the prefix/suffix system that modifies word meaning, and vocabulary (few cognates with European languages). But the core grammar is genuinely simple.

Are Indonesian and Malay the same language?

Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia) and Malay (Bahasa Melayu) are very close and mutually intelligible at around 80-90%. Both descend from commercial Malay, which was the lingua franca of Southeast Asia for centuries. The main differences are in vocabulary (Dutch loanwords for Indonesian, English for Malay), some expressions, and the spelling of certain words. An Indonesian speaker can communicate without issue with a Malaysian or a Singaporean.

These Arabic loanwords account for around 10-15% of everyday vocabulary. Indonesia is the most populous Muslim country in the world, with a tradition of moderate and tolerant Islam.
