Frequently asked questions about learning Romanian
Romanian is probably the most intuitively understandable Romance language for speakers of English with some French background, after Portuguese and Spanish. The core vocabulary is Latin: 'apă' (water, cf. Latin 'aqua'), 'soare' (sun, cf. Latin 'sol'), 'mână' (hand, cf. Latin 'manus'). Grammatical structures share similarities with French and Spanish. The Foreign Service Institute ranks Romanian at level 2-3 out of 5 for Romance-language speakers.
'Moldovan' is in reality the same language as Romanian, since 1991, Moldova has officially recognized that the language spoken is Romanian (despite political debates tied to Russian influence). The main difference is the geopolitical context and some more pronounced Slavic/Russian borrowings in Moldova. A Romanian and a Moldovan understand each other perfectly. Moldova is considering EU membership, Romanian is becoming strategically important.
Yes, Romania provides the largest Eastern European diaspora in Western Europe. The Romanian community in France is estimated at 700,000 to 1 million people, many working in healthcare (doctors, nurses) and construction.
