Frequently asked questions about learning Serbian
Not strictly required, but strongly recommended. Serbian is officially written in both alphabets, and most signs, newspapers and official documents use both. Serbian Cyrillic has 30 letters and can be learned in 1 week. The bonus: mastering Cyrillic also gives you access to Russian, Ukrainian and Bulgarian.
Linguistically, they are very close and mutually intelligible (often grouped under 'BCMS'). The main differences are vocabulary (Turkish borrowings in Bosnian, Latin ones in Croatian), alphabet (Cyrillic + Latin in Serbian, Latin only in Croatian) and some grammatical variations. Learning Serbian gives you access to all three countries and their 20 million speakers.
