Frequently asked questions about learning Bengali
The Bengali alphabet (বর্ণমালা) has 50 letters and is written from left to right. It is an abugida script derived from Sanskrit, each consonant carries an inherent vowel. Most learners read the basic letters within 4 to 6 weeks of regular practice. Once the alphabet is mastered, Bengali phonology is relatively regular and predictable.
Bangladeshi Bengali and Indian Bengali (West Bengal) are mutually intelligible but differ in pronunciation and vocabulary. Kolkata Bengali is generally considered closer to the standard literary language, whereas Dhaka Bengali has absorbed more Urdu and Arabic loanwords.
