Learn Fula with real humans

Fula is a language spoken by native communities worldwide. Fula (also called Fulani, Fulfulde or Pulaar) is one of the major languages of West Africa, spoken by 40 to 50 million people across roughly twenty countries, from Senegal all the way to Sudan, including Guinea, Mali, Niger, Nigeria and Cameroon. The language of the Fula people, the world's largest nomadic pastoral group, Fula stands out for its unique system of noun classes (24 gender classes) and an extraordinary epic oral tradition. With the rise of West Africa as a key economic zone, Fula is becoming a rare strategic asset.

Did you know? Fula is unique in Africa for its system of 24 noun classes (equivalent to 'grammatical gender' but extended to all categories of objects, animals and actions), a complexity that fascinates linguists. The concept of 'Pulaaku', the Fula philosophy of life, defines a code of honor built on restraint (munyal), modesty (semteende) and prudence (hakkille), values transmitted through the language. The Fula are also known for 'goro', a kola nut offered as a sign of hospitality: refusing a kola nut from a Fula person is a serious breach of etiquette. The Fula diaspora in Europe (around 200,000 people in France alone) is one of the largest on the continent.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Fula

It depends on your context. Senegalese Pulaar (also called Toucouleur in the north) is the most commonly taught variant in Europe, as the Senegalese-Guinean diaspora is the most represented. Fulfulde from Niger and Cameroon is geographically more widespread but less commonly taught. The variants are mutually intelligible at 70–80%, so learning Senegalese Pulaar will give you a solid foundation for communicating across the Sahel region.
Fula is objectively a complex language: its 24 noun classes (compared to 2 in French, or none in English) require rigorous study. The phonology includes distinctions of vowel length and geminate consonants. On the other hand, verb conjugation is fairly regular and the language is primarily oral in most contexts, which lightens the written load. With a structured method, conversational basics are achievable in 4–6 months.
Very useful, and often underestimated. In countries like Mali, Niger, Guinea and Senegal, Fula is often the language of inter-ethnic communication in rural areas, more so than French or English. For professionals in healthcare, humanitarian work, agricultural development or microfinance targeting Fula herders and farmers, speaking a few phrases of Fula radically changes the trust relationship.
Self-study resources in Fula are rare compared to major languages. You'll find a few academic textbooks (notably produced by INALCO in Paris, which has a Fula department), Pulaar-French dictionaries, and a few emerging mobile apps. Targumi's strength lies precisely there: native Fula teachers enable direct, contextualized oral learning, far more effective than the few available textbooks.
Yes, several. Historically, Fula was written in Ajami (an adapted Arabic script), used in the Fula Islamic kingdoms of the 18th century (Fouta Djallon, Sokoto). Today, the Latin alphabet is the international academic norm. There is also the Adlam alphabet, created in the 1980s by two teenage Guinean brothers, Ibrahima and Abdoulaye Barry, to give Fula its own script. Adlam is now integrated into Unicode and modern mobile keyboards.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
