What's the difference between Brazilian Portuguese and European Portuguese?

The most immediate difference is the accent: Brazilians pronounce every vowel openly, while European Portuguese speakers 'swallow' many unstressed vowels. Vocabulary also differs: 'ônibus' (bus) in Brazil vs 'autocarro' in Portugal, 'celular' (mobile phone) vs 'telemóvel'. The grammar is broadly identical, with a few differences in the use of 'tu' vs 'você'.

Can you prepare for CELPE-Bras with Targumi?

Which regions of Brazil have the most distinct accents?

The carioca accent (from Rio) is melodic with 's' sounds pronounced like 'sh'. The paulistano (from São Paulo) is more neutral and often used as the reference. The nordeste region (Bahia, Recife, Fortaleza) has very melodic, folk-flavored accents. The gaucho (Rio Grande do Sul, on the Argentine border) carries a Hispanic influence.
