Our story

Learning a language means talking to people, not to an algorithm

Targumi was born from a conviction: no language should be inaccessible due to a lack of method, teachers or quality resources. Over 100 languages, each taught by a partner native teacher.

Our mission

Make every language accessible, from the most spoken to the rarest. English, Spanish, Mandarin, but also Kurmanji, Mooré, Lingala, Malagasy. No language deserves to be left aside.

Targumi brings together motivated learners and native teachers selected around the world, in small-group live sessions. No bots. No chatbots. Just humans who speak, correct, transmit.

Our pedagogical method

1
Communicative approach
You speak from the first class. Vocabulary and grammar arrive as support, not as obstacle.
2
Rigorous sourcing
For each language, especially the least documented ones, every published vocabulary word is verified against at least 2 reliable concordant sources: academic dictionaries, institutional resources, native validations.
3
Small online groups
Enough learners to create exchange dynamics, not too many for everyone to speak in every session.
4
Levels A1 to C2
From absolute beginner to near-native level, across the entire catalog.
102

How it all started

In 2024, I wanted to learn Kurmanji, the Northern Kurdish language. No serious platform existed: no app, no structured manual, few reliable resources.

Rather than give up, I did what no mainstream app offered: I created Kurmanji School, a platform dedicated to that single language, with structured courses and native teachers. Demand quickly outgrew my personal frustration. Learners asked above all for one thing: to talk with a human, not click on bubbles.

This insight gave birth to an ecosystem of specialized platforms: Wolof School, Swahili School, Darija School, Arabic Global Academy and Speak Turkish Online. Each one shares the same philosophy: a serious site for one language, native teachers, video classes.

In December 2025, Targumi was born to scale up. One platform, over 100 languages, the same quality commitment as the individual sites. Targumi does not replace niche languages: it offers them the same infrastructure once reserved for English or Spanish.

Our vision

Become the global reference for language learning, without hierarchy. No one should give up learning Tigrinya, Guarani, Faroese or Kurmanji because no serious platform offers the service.

A world where you can learn any language spoken on Earth with a native teacher. That is the Targumi project.

Our values

🗣️
Real interaction
Learning a language means talking to people, not to an application.
👥
Small groups
An exchange dynamic, without the fear of speaking up.
🌍
Native teachers
Our teachers grew up with their language. They transmit its nuances, not just its grammar.
Rigorous sourcing
Every published word is verified against at least 2 reliable sources.

Theteam

Targumi is led by its founder, who works with a network of partner native teachers covering the 100+ languages in the catalog. The platform favors a lean structure: every course is designed and supervised directly by the core team, without intermediaries.

The founder

Benjamin Maubacq, Founder of Targumi
Benjamin Maubacq
Founder of Targumi

Benjamin founded Targumi in December 2025, after more than ten years of digital and EdTech entrepreneurship. His conviction: the least-taught languages deserve as much attention as the most spoken.

Before Targumi, Benjamin launched an ecosystem of platforms dedicated to niche languages: Kurmanji School, Wolof School, Swahili School, Darija School, Arabic Global Academy and Speak Turkish Online. Targumi is the generalist version of that obsession.

He also designed several EdTech platforms for French students: Réussir son BTS, Réussir son Brevet, Réussir son BUT and Examood. All share the same philosophy: serious content, made by humans, accessible to all.

« A language with one million speakers is rare nowhere, except in the heads of people who have never heard of it. »

Frequently asked questions

How is Targumi different from Duolingo or Babbel?

Targumi offers live video classes with native teachers, in small groups. Duolingo and Babbel are fully self-paced applications, with no human interaction. Our approach is complementary: you learn to speak, not just to recognize.

Do I have to commit to a long subscription?

No. Targumi offers flexible plans (quarterly, yearly, lifetime access) without loyalty commitment. You can stop whenever you want.

How are your native teachers selected?

All our teachers are native speakers of the language they teach, with pedagogical experience. They are selected based on their command of the language, their teaching skills and their ability to transmit culture.

Is Targumi accessible to complete beginners?

Yes. Our catalog covers every level, from A1 (absolute beginner) to C2 (near-native). For niche languages, we have even designed survival kits to get started in 30 minutes.

What happens if I cannot attend a session?

Sessions can be replayed afterwards. You never lose the content of a missed session.

How many languages will eventually be available?

We currently offer over 100 live languages. Our goal: cover every language spoken by at least 100,000 people in the world.
