Frequently asked questions about learning Czech

Is Czech hard to learn?

Czech is rated Category 4 of 5 for difficulty. The seven cases, three grammatical genders, and the pronunciation of certain sounds (the famous 'ř') are the main challenges. That said, Czech is written in the Latin alphabet augmented with háčeks (diacritic marks), no new alphabet to learn. The grammar is complex but logical. Our teachers introduce the cases gradually through everyday situations.

How many people speak Czech worldwide?

Czech is spoken by around 13 million people, 10.5 million in Czechia, plus the Slovak diaspora (very high mutual intelligibility) and communities in the US, Austria and Germany. It's a niche language with huge cultural reach: Kafka, Kundera, Havel, Prague's cubist architecture, Czech gives you access to a unique European culture.

Is Czech close to Slovak and Polish?

Czech and Slovak are very close, mutual intelligibility of around 90% (during Czechoslovakia, the two languages coexisted seamlessly). Polish belongs to the same West Slavic family but with lower direct intelligibility (roughly 40-50%). Learning Czech makes Slovak, Polish, and to a lesser extent Ukrainian and Russian, much easier to pick up.

Are there many job opportunities in Czechia?

Yes. Czechia has one of the most dynamic economies in Central Europe, with one of the lowest unemployment rates in the EU. Prague attracts tech companies (Avast, JetBrains, Kiwi.com) and serves as a major hub for shared service centers. Speaking Czech opens up roles inaccessible to English-only speakers and is often required for positions with local clients.

Is Czech useful for visiting Prague?

Prague is one of the most beautiful cities in Europe and attracts millions of tourists every year. Even a few Czech phrases set you apart from the crowd, Praguers are touched by the effort and will treat you very differently.
