Do I need to learn Devanagari to speak Hindi?

Not necessarily to start speaking. You can begin with transliteration (romanized Hindi) and introduce Devanagari progressively. But for intermediate level and beyond, Devanagari is essential for reading texts, menus, signs and messages. Good news: Devanagari is phonetically consistent and can be learned in 3 to 4 weeks with daily practice.

Is Hindi understood everywhere in India?

Hindi is understood by around 60% of the Indian population, especially in the 'Hindi Belt' (northern India: Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Delhi). In the south (Tamil Nadu, Kerala, Karnataka), English is often preferred over Hindi. For travel in North India and business in major metropolitan areas, Hindi is the key language.
