Learn Fon with real humans

Fon is a language spoken by native communities worldwide. Fon (Fɔngbe) is the main language of Benin, spoken by around 4 million people across the southern part of the country, including Cotonou, Abomey and Porto-Novo. The language of the Fon people, heirs of the Kingdom of Dahomey (one of the most powerful states of pre-colonial West Africa), Fon is inseparable from Vodun, the animist religion that spread as far as the Caribbean through the transatlantic slave trade. Benin is now recognised as the 'spiritual homeland of Voodoo' and attracts researchers, artists and travellers from around the world.

Did you know? Beninese Vodun is profoundly different from Haitian or Louisiana Voodoo, it is the original form, deeply rooted in Fon society. The Vodun are deities who embody natural forces: Mawu (creation), Legba (the crossroads), Sakpata (disease and healing). The annual Vodun Festival held on 10 January in Ouidah draws practitioners from around the world. Learning Fon means stepping into a complete cosmology and a worldview radically distinct from the major monotheistic religions, a rare intellectual and spiritual experience.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Fon

Fon is tonal with three levels (high, mid, low). It is slightly more complex than Bambara (two tones), but the tones work in a regular and systematic way. In natural conversation, context helps disambiguate words. Our native teachers integrate tonality from the very first sessions through songs and fixed expressions, a far more effective method than abstract drills.
French is the official language, but Fon is the language of everyday life in southern Benin. In the Dantokpa markets (the largest market in West Africa), at Vodun ceremonies, in villages and in family settings, Fon is unavoidable. For anthropology researchers, journalists, artists and development workers, speaking Fon opens up a cultural depth that French alone cannot reach.
Yes, Fon belongs to the Gbe language family alongside Ewe (Togo, Ghana), Gen, Aja and Phla-Pherá. These languages are close and partially mutually intelligible. If you speak Fon, you will have a strong foundation for understanding Togolese Ewe. Fon also has historical ties with languages spoken in the African diaspora of the Caribbean (Haiti, Cuba) through enslaved people taken from Dahomey.
Fon is recognised but not widely taught in the Beninese school system, French remains dominant in formal education. However, since the 2000s, there has been a movement to revalue Benin's national languages, and Fon is beginning to appear in some local education programmes. Its written standardisation is still developing, our courses focus on spoken Fon and practical conversation.
With its simple SVO grammar, the absence of complex morphology and a vocabulary largely independent of French (with no massive borrowings), Fon takes around 6 to 8 months to reach basic conversational level with two lessons per week. Tonality is the main challenge, but once the mechanisms are understood, progress is steady. Travellers or humanitarian workers targeting a short mission can acquire the essentials in 2 to 3 months.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
