Frequently asked questions about learning Polish

Is Polish really one of the hardest languages?

Polish is classified among the difficult languages for English and French speakers (level 4 out of 5 at the Foreign Service Institute). The 7 cases, 3 grammatical genders and the pronunciation of consonant clusters (szcz, chrz, dż) are the main obstacles. But several factors make learning easier: the Latin alphabet, consistent pronunciation (each letter has a fixed sound), and the absence of tones. With a progressive method, most of our students reach basic conversation in 6–9 months.

Will Polish help me learn other Slavic languages?

Yes, it's one of the best Slavic linguistic investments. The formal address (the 'Pan/Pani' + 3rd person form) is mandatory in Polish professional contexts, unlike the widespread use of first names in English-speaking business culture. At Targumi, we teach language registers from the intermediate level: knowing when to use Pan/Pani and how to write a polite professional email is a key skill.

How do you correctly pronounce Polish ł, ą, ę?

The Polish 'ł' is pronounced like an English 'w' (not like an 'l'). The 'ą' is a nasal vowel close to the French 'on' in 'bon', or the English 'on' in a heavily nasalized pronunciation. The 'ę' is close to a nasalized 'en'. These sounds seem confusing in writing but our teachers introduce them from the very first lesson with repetition exercises and audio recordings, and French-speaking students actually have an advantage with nasal vowels thanks to French.
