FAQ
Frequently asked questions about learning Slovak
No, but they are over 90% mutually intelligible. The two languages are understood without an interpreter, Czechs and Slovaks watch the same films without subtitles. The differences lie in vocabulary (a few dozen common words), accent and some structures. If you learn Slovak, you'll understand Czech quickly, and vice versa.
Absolutely. Slovakia is the world's largest per-capita car producer. The Volkswagen (Bratislava), Kia (Žilina) and Stellantis (Trnava) plants employ tens of thousands of people. Speaking Slovak is essential for management positions and for relations with local suppliers. The industry also recruits in engineering, logistics and maintenance.
Yes. Slovak is very close to Czech (nearly identical) and shares strong foundations with Polish and Croatian. Once you've mastered Slovak, switching to Czech takes a few weeks, and South Slavic languages (Croatian, Serbian) become much more accessible. It's a gateway to the entire Central Slavic space.
Bratislava is a human-scale capital (500,000 inhabitants), 1 hour from Vienna and 2 hours from Budapest. It offers a moderate cost of living (about 30% cheaper than Paris), a beautiful pedestrian old town and easy connections across Central Europe. The city is booming, with many multinationals setting up their regional headquarters there.
For an English speaker, count on 10-12 months with regular classes to reach B1. If you already speak Czech or Polish, 4-6 months is enough.
