Learn Tigrinya with real humans

Tigrinya is a Semitic language spoken by roughly 9 million people, the national language of Eritrea and the language of the Tigray region in Ethiopia. Written in the Ge'ez alphabet (fidel), the same script used for Amharic, Tigrinya belongs to the Ethiopic branch of the Semitic language family. With a highly active Eritrean diaspora across Europe (Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, France), Tigrinya has become an important language of the African diaspora in Europe.

Did you know? The Ge'ez alphabet used to write Tigrinya is one of the oldest alphabets still in use in the world, dating back to the 4th century. Unlike Arabic or Hebrew, which are written right-to-left, Ge'ez is written left-to-right. Eritrea is one of the youngest countries in the world, independent from Ethiopia only since 1993. The Eritrean diaspora is one of the largest African diasporas in proportion to its home population: an estimated 500,000 Eritreans live in Europe. Asmara, the capital, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site for its modernist Italian architecture.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Tigrinya

Tigrinya and Amharic share the same alphabet (Ge'ez/fidel) and both belong to the Ethiopic branch of the Semitic language family, but they are not mutually intelligible. They share roughly 30 to 40% of basic vocabulary. If you learn Tigrinya, you'll be able to read Amharic (since the script is identical) but not understand it without additional study. The two languages behave like French and Portuguese: same family, but distinct languages.
If you work specifically in the Tigray region (northern Ethiopia) or with the Eritrean diaspora in Europe, Tigrinya is the natural choice. Amharic is Ethiopia's official language and more useful for Addis Ababa and other regions. Tigrinya is essential for Eritrea (there's no alternative). For the Eritrean diaspora in France, Germany, Sweden or elsewhere in Europe, Tigrinya is the primary community language.
The Ge'ez alphabet has 231 syllables (7 orders × 33 base consonants), which looks daunting at first. In reality, the logic is simple: each consonant has a base form modified consistently for each vowel. Once you've memorized the base column (33 consonants), the 6 vocalized variations follow a logical visual pattern. Most of our learners can read fluently within 6 to 8 weeks of regular practice.
Yes, the Eritrean community in Europe numbers in the hundreds of thousands, with major presences in Sweden, Germany, Switzerland, Italy, the Netherlands and France. It's a very tight-knit community, with cultural associations and Eritrean restaurants. Many second-generation members want to relearn Tigrinya to reconnect with their heritage. The language is also spoken by Eritrean refugees who have arrived in Europe in recent years.
Yes, Eritrea has one of the highest refugee rates in the world relative to its population. NGOs working with Eritrean refugees in Ethiopia, Sudan, Libya and Europe have a real need for staff who speak Tigrinya. UNHCR, the Red Cross and many European NGOs actively recruit people with Tigrinya language skills for their reception and integration programs.

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
