Frequently asked questions about learning Maltese
Yes, and this is what makes it absolutely unique. Maltese descends from the Siculo-Tunisian Arabic spoken in Malta after the Arab conquest (9th century), but it absorbed so many Sicilian, Norman, and Romance influences that its grammar and vocabulary form a blend without equivalent anywhere. Writing this Semitic language in the Latin alphabet (with a few special characters like ħ, għ, ċ) makes it partially readable for Italian and French speakers.
Partially, roughly 30-40% of basic Maltese vocabulary is of Arabic origin, but the phonology has shifted considerably (no Arabic guttural sounds like ayn or ha), and the Romance and English borrowings are extensive. An Arabic speaker will recognize familiar roots but will not understand a Maltese conversation without study. That said, Maltese is fascinating for anyone who knows Arabic, as it illuminates the connections between Semitic and Romance languages.
Malta is an EU hub for finance, online gaming, and tech, with favorable taxation and widespread English. For expatriates, English is sufficient in the professional world. But for genuine integration into the Maltese community, particularly in towns and villages outside Valletta, Maltese is the key. A vocabulary-driven approach makes learning faster than expected.
Maltese is considered moderately difficult for Western Europeans, the Semitic structure is disorienting, but the Romance vocabulary and accessible phonology help. For a French or English speaker, expect 8 to 12 months of regular classes to reach B1. If you already speak Italian, 5 to 7 months is enough. The Latin alphabet is an immediate advantage, you can start deciphering texts within the first few weeks.
