Frequently asked questions about learning Dutch

Dutch and German belong to the same Germanic branch and share roughly 50–60% of their vocabulary. But Dutch grammar is noticeably simpler than German: 2 genders (de/het) instead of 3, fewer cases, and more regular conjugations. If you already have an A2 level in German, you'll be reading basic Dutch within a few weeks. And the reverse is true too, Dutch is an excellent stepping stone to German.
Standard Dutch (ABN, Algemeen Beschaafd Nederlands) is the common foundation. The Flemish spoken in Belgium stands out through its accent (more melodic, with certain sounds pronounced differently), a few unique expressions, and slightly different vocabulary. In Antwerp, the accent can be hard to understand even for a Dutch speaker from Amsterdam.
Essential for full integration. In the Netherlands, English is nearly universal in large companies, but local positions (government, healthcare, education, SMEs) require NT2 (Nederlands als Tweede Taal).
