Frequently asked questions about learning Tamil
The Tamil alphabet (an abugida) has 12 vowels, 18 consonants and 216 combined characters, plus a few special ones, 247 total. It's more complex than the Latin alphabet but highly logical: every combination follows consistent rules. With 6 to 8 weeks of daily practice, you can read basic syllables. Spoken Tamil can start with Latin transliteration while the alphabet is learned gradually.
Indian Tamil (Tamil Nadu, Chennai) and Sri Lankan Tamil are mutually intelligible but differ in accent, vocabulary and register. Sri Lankan Tamil is often considered closer to classical Tamil in certain formulations. Chennai-produced films and series dominate global Tamil pop culture, our courses teach standard Tamil with notes on regional variations.
