Frequently asked questions about learning Igbo
Igbo is tonal with three tones (high, low, falling). Tones change the meaning of words, 'ọ bịa' (he came) vs 'ọ bịa' with a different tone changes everything. Igbo also uses diacritic letters (ọ, ụ) that represent lowered vowel sounds. These sounds do not exist in English, but our native teachers train you to identify and produce them progressively. Context helps a great deal in natural conversations.
The Igbo people control a significant share of commerce and industry in Nigeria, markets, transport and manufacturing in the south-east. Onitsha hosts one of the largest markets in Africa. Speaking Igbo in commercial transactions in south-eastern Nigeria gives you an immediate edge over English speakers. The Igbo community is also highly active in the diaspora, the UK, the US, Germany, and community connections are extremely strong.
Achebe chose to write in English (a controversial decision) but his work put the Igbo world on the global literary map. His impact on Igbo culture is immense, he contributed to the standardisation of written Igbo and to Igbo cultural pride around the world. His novels contain many translated Igbo proverbs that give a glimpse into the philosophy of the language. Learning Igbo means reading Achebe in a different light.
The Nigerian community in France is estimated at 40,000 to 60,000 people, of whom a significant proportion are Igbo, particularly in Paris and the Île-de-France region.
