Learn Igbo with real humans

Igbo is the language of the Igbo people of south-eastern Nigeria, around 45 million speakers, one of Nigeria's three major ethnic groups alongside the Yoruba and the Hausa. A culture of merchants and entrepreneurs, the Igbo are often called 'the Jews of Africa' for their active diaspora and their business acumen. Igbo literature entered the global canon with Chinua Achebe and his novel 'Things Fall Apart', translated into 57 languages. Onitsha, Aba, Enugu and Owerri are the major cities of Igboland.

Did you know? Igbo has one of the most fascinating numeration systems in Africa, a base-10 system with complex structures for large numbers. Igbo culture places intense value on education, entrepreneurship and social mobility, which explains the over-representation of the Igbo in the professions, commerce and the arts in Africa and the diaspora. The Ozo, the traditional Igbo honorific title awarded to men of standing, involves elaborate ceremonies that can last several days. Okonkwo, the torn hero of 'Things Fall Apart', has become the literary archetype of the tension between tradition and modernity in Africa.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Igbo

Igbo is tonal with three tones (high, low, falling). Tones change the meaning of words, 'ọ bịa' (he came) vs 'ọ bịa' with a different tone changes everything. Igbo also uses diacritic letters (ọ, ụ) that represent lowered vowel sounds. These sounds do not exist in English, but our native teachers train you to identify and produce them progressively. Context helps a great deal in natural conversations.
The Igbo people control a significant share of commerce and industry in Nigeria, markets, transport and manufacturing in the south-east. Onitsha hosts one of the largest markets in Africa. Speaking Igbo in commercial transactions in south-eastern Nigeria gives you an immediate edge over English speakers. The Igbo community is also highly active in the diaspora, the UK, the US, Germany, and community connections are extremely strong.
Achebe chose to write in English (a controversial decision) but his work put the Igbo world on the global literary map. His impact on Igbo culture is immense, he contributed to the standardisation of written Igbo and to Igbo cultural pride around the world. His novels contain many translated Igbo proverbs that give a glimpse into the philosophy of the language. Learning Igbo means reading Achebe in a different light.
The Nigerian community in France is estimated at 40,000 to 60,000 people, of whom a significant proportion are Igbo, particularly in Paris and the Île-de-France region. The UK also hosts a very large Igbo community. The Igbo community abroad is well organised (cultural associations, festivals) and maintains strong ties with Nigeria. For professionals working with this community, or for people of Igbo descent wishing to preserve their heritage, Igbo is a precious bridge.
Igbo is classed as a difficult language for Europeans, tones, special phonemes and complex morphology. For an English or French speaker, expect 10 to 14 months with two lessons per week to reach B1. That said, greeting formulas and basic phrases are learned quickly and are hugely appreciated by Igbo speakers. Travellers targeting south-eastern Nigeria can acquire the practical essentials in 2 to 3 months of focused lessons.
