Afrikaans is one of the most accessible Germanic languages. Its grammar was 'simplified' compared to Dutch, no grammatical cases, past tense formed with a single auxiliary 'het', and streamlined definite articles. If you already speak Dutch or German, you'll be reading Afrikaans within days. For English speakers, 3 to 4 months is enough to reach a basic conversational level.
Afrikaans and Dutch share roughly 85 to 90% of vocabulary and are partially mutually intelligible in writing. But Afrikaans simplified the grammar: no grammatical genders (everything uses 'die' or 'n'), past tense formed invariably with 'het + infinitive', and phonetic spelling. Afrikaans also absorbed Malay, Bantu, Portuguese and English words not found in Dutch.
