Frequently asked questions about learning Georgian

Is the Georgian alphabet hard to learn?

Mkhedruli has 33 letters, no uppercase, no lowercase. It is a phonetic and regular alphabet: each letter corresponds to a single sound. Most learners read fluently within 2 to 3 weeks. The letters are very distinct from one another, which prevents confusion. It is often the first concrete satisfaction in learning Georgian.

Is Georgian grammar very difficult?

Georgian uses an ergative construction, the subject changes form depending on whether the verb is transitive or intransitive, which does not exist in English. Consonant clusters are also complex (up to six consonants in a row: 'vprtskvni' = I peel). But core vocabulary is attainable quickly, and pronunciation becomes regular once the sounds are mastered. Our courses progress from conversation towards grammar, not the other way around.

Is Georgia really the birthplace of wine?

Yes, traces of winemaking dating back to 6,000 BC have been discovered in Georgia, making it the oldest known wine production site.
