Frequently asked questions about learning Slovenian
Genetically yes, all three are South Slavic languages. But in practice, Slovenian is not mutually intelligible with Croatian or Serbian without study. The differences in vocabulary, phonology and grammar (notably the Slovenian dual) are significant. Slovenians generally understand Croatian better than the reverse, due to media and historical proximity.
The dual is a distinct grammatical form used to designate exactly two people or objects, neither singular nor plural, but a third form. In Slovenian, 'midva greva' (we two are going) is different from 'mi gremo' (we are going as a group). It's an archaic grammatical feature, very rare in modern languages. Our teachers introduce it progressively to avoid initial confusion.
Slovenia is regularly ranked among the most sustainable and pleasant countries to live in in Europe. Ljubljana is a very lively city for its size, with a rich cultural and culinary scene. The country is an EU and Schengen member, with a cost of living lower than Western Europe and exceptional nature (the Alps, Adriatic coast, forests). Ljubljana's tech and startup ecosystem is growing rapidly.
Partially. Understanding Slovenian gives you a foundation for grasping Croatian (with more effort), but Serbian, Bosnian and Macedonian are further removed. To travel across the former Yugoslav region, Serbo-Croatian is more strategic. However, to explore Slovenia specifically, its natural parks, vineyards and castles, a few basics of Slovenian transform the experience.
For an English speaker, count on 10-14 months with regular classes to reach B1. The 6 cases, the dual and verbal aspects are the main challenges.
