Frequently asked questions about learning Korean

Is Hangul really as easy to learn as people say?

Yes, it is one of the few language claims that actually lives up to its promise. Hangul is a phonetic alphabetic system where each letter corresponds to a sound, and the shape of the letters often mirrors the shape of the mouth producing that sound, a stroke of genius. Most of our students can read and write Hangul fluently after 1 to 2 weeks of daily 20-minute practice. It is often the first concrete, motivating win on the Korean-learning journey.

K-pop and K-dramas made me want to learn Korean. Is that a good starting point?

An excellent starting point, and you're in very good company, it's the #1 motivation among our Korean students. K-pop exposes you to natural pronunciation and contemporary vocabulary. Our teachers build lessons around your favourite artists or dramas: decoding BTS or BLACKPINK lyrics, scenes from K-dramas, and those phrases you've heard and finally want to understand properly. Learning through what you love is the most effective method there is.

Are Korean politeness levels hard to master?

This is the main cultural challenge of Korean. Social hierarchy (age, status, relationship) determines which level of speech to use, and getting it wrong can genuinely cause offence. There are 7 formal politeness levels, but in daily life only 2 are widely used: jondaemal (formal and polite) for strangers, elders and professional settings, and banmal (informal) for close friends and family. Our lessons always start with jondaemal, the 'safe' level in every situation.

Can I prepare for the TOPIK with Targumi?

Yes. The TOPIK (Test Of Proficiency In Korean) is the official certification from the Korean government, offered in two versions: TOPIK I (levels 1-2, beginner to elementary) and TOPIK II (levels 3-6, intermediate to advanced). It is recognised for work visas, studies in Korea and hiring at Korean companies (Samsung, Hyundai, LG, SK and more). We offer dedicated preparation tracks with practice exercises and mock exams.

How long does it take to understand a K-drama without subtitles?

Most of our students start catching isolated phrases without subtitles after 3 to 4 months. Understanding 70 to 80% of a typical drama unaided generally requires a B2 level (18 to 24 months of regular practice). The most effective strategy: from A2 onwards, watch with Korean subtitles (not English). Your brain automatically connects sound and text, one of the best natural accelerators in language learning.

Is Korean useful for working with Korean companies?

South Korea is the 13th largest economy in the world and home to global conglomerates (chaebol): Samsung, Hyundai, Kia, LG, SK, Lotte. Europe is an important trading partner.
