The platform

Progress in Zulu between classes, at your own pace

Interactive lessons with native audio, vocabulary, dialogues and quizzes. Everything you need to reinforce your skills between live sessions.

The platform

Between classes, you move forward twenty minutes a day

Lessons follow one another in order, with no evening to set aside. Every word is recorded by a native speaker.

  • 191 lessons across 39 modules, from beginner to advanced
  • Native audio on every word, with a slow-down button
  • Your progress is kept, on phone and on computer alike
Audio

You hear the language as it is actually spoken

The recordings are made by native speakers, not by a synthetic voice. The slow-down button separates the sounds when it goes too fast.

  • Every sentence can be played and slowed down
  • The transcription and translation sit under the audio
  • You replay it as many times as you need, with no limit
Quizzes

Every module ends with a quiz, not with a ticked box

You are corrected on the spot, with the explanation. A failed quiz can be retaken, with no penalty and no record.

  • Immediate correction, with the right answer explained
  • An end-of-level test opens the next level
  • A level certificate at the end of the course

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Zulu

Yes, Zulu is the most widespread mother tongue in South Africa (23% of the population), ahead of Xhosa (16%) and Afrikaans (13%). English is the language of business and government, but speaking Zulu in interpersonal settings completely transforms relationships. In Johannesburg and Durban, Zulu is everywhere, in taxis, markets, and sports stadiums.
Yes, they are two Bantu languages in the Nguni subfamily, mutually intelligible at around 50-60%. Both have clicks, a similar noun-class grammar, and shared vocabulary. A Zulu speaker often understands Xhosa without any training, and vice versa. If you learn Zulu, you have a foundation for understanding Xhosa, Swati, and Ndebele. It's the most widely spoken language family in Southern Africa.
Zulu has three clicks (dental 'c', lateral 'x', palatal 'q'), identical to those in Xhosa. In practice, clicks appear in certain words but don't dominate everyday conversations. With a native teacher guiding pronunciation live, learners progress quickly. Most master the basic clicks within a few weeks of regular practice. The more persistent challenge is usually verbal agreement with noun classes.
Absolutely. Zulu is the language of many South African series and films available on Netflix and Amazon Prime, notably Blood & Water, which is set in Cape Town but features plenty of Zulu dialogue. Kwaito music and amapiano (the South African genre that has gone viral since 2022) are often sung in Zulu and Sotho. Understanding Zulu gives you access to a globally booming music culture.
For a survival conversational level (greetings, shopping, directions), count on 2 to 3 months with regular lessons. For an intermediate level that enables real exchanges in townships or with South African colleagues, count on 10 to 14 months. The noun-class grammar is the main challenge, but once you grasp it intuitively, the language becomes logical. Phonetics are regular, with no tones as in English.

C

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

D

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

DamienVerified purchase
S

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

SorayaVerified purchase
A

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

AntoineVerified purchase
E

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
