Frequently asked questions about learning Persian (Farsi)
Persian is considered moderately difficult. Its grammar is very regular and logical: no grammatical gender, no definite/indefinite articles, and predictable conjugation. The real challenge is the Perso-Arabic script (32 letters) and the right-to-left direction. Most learners can read fluently within 4 to 6 weeks.
These are three variants of the same language. Farsi is spoken in Iran, Dari in Afghanistan (with a pronunciation closer to Classical Persian), and Tajik in Tajikistan (written in Cyrillic). A speaker of one understands the others without too much difficulty. Our classes mainly cover standard Iranian Farsi.
Iran has a $400 billion economy and a population of 85 million educated people. Despite sanctions, many sectors remain accessible: petrochemicals, agriculture, tech, tourism. The Iranian diaspora in Western countries (~1 million people across the US, Canada and Europe) also represents a significant professional network.
For basic communication, transliteration is enough during the first weeks. But to truly progress, the script is essential: all resources (newspapers, books, subtitles) are in the Persian script. Our classes integrate the script from the start to build real foundations.
