FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Comorian

Comorian is written in the Latin alphabet and pronounced much as it is spelled, which removes the usual hurdle of a new script. The grammar, however, is Bantu: no masculine or feminine gender, but noun classes that govern agreement, and prefixes stacked in front of the verb (tsihuvendza means I love you, with tsi for I, hu for you and vendza for to love). Stress usually falls on the second to last syllable, and Shingazidja keeps pitch variations that the spelling does not mark. The vocabulary helps more than you would expect: Arabic supplied marahaba, tafadhali, samahani and kitabu, while French left lapitali for hospital (from l'hôpital) and, in Mayotte, likoli for school (from l'école). For simple conversation, count on four to six months of regular practice.
Both, depending on the setting. The archipelago first wrote its language in Arabic script, the Ajami tradition, with adaptations specific to the Comoros, and that script is still alive in religious and private use. The Latin orthography was settled by presidential decree in December 2009 and has served since as the reference standard for writing Comorian, in dictionaries as in textbooks: that is the one you learn here. In public life French remains the language of administration and of school, and written usage of Comorian still varies from one author to the next. The main thing to get used to is the letter combinations specific to Comorian, dj, dz, ts, dr and ndr, as in ndzia (road) or mndru-mme (man). So you are reading from the very first lesson, with no new alphabet to memorise.
We teach Shingazidja, spoken on Grande Comore and in the capital, Moroni. The four varieties fall into two groups: Shingazidja and Shimwali in the west, Shindzuani and Shimaore in the east. Within a group speakers understand each other effortlessly; across groups it takes a short adjustment, which speakers manage well in practice. The differences are mostly lexical and phonetic: good morning is Bariza in Shingazidja and Barza in Shimaore, school is shiyoni on Grande Comore and likoli in Mayotte, a child is mwana on one side and motro on the other. These variants are flagged as you go, so you stay understood from one island to the next.
The Comorian diaspora in France alone is estimated at 200,000 to 300,000 people, to the point that a former president of the Comoros called Marseille the fifth island of the archipelago; Paris, Lyon, Nice and Dunkirk also host long established communities. In Mayotte, 75% of residents aged 15 and over say they can speak Shimaore, which is listed alongside Kibushi among the languages of France by the Ministry of Culture. Mayotte has been a French department since 2011 and the Union of the Comoros claims it: that dispute is not ours to settle, and the language itself moves freely on both sides of the channel. For social workers, health staff, teachers and public servants in contact with these families, a few months of Comorian change the quality of every exchange; for someone of Comorian descent, it is often the language grandparents tell their stories in.
Count on eight to twelve months of regular lessons to reach B1 and hold a conversation about family, the market, travel and work. The start is fast, because the alphabet is Latin and the pronunciation regular. The real obstacles come later: noun classes and their chained agreement, the prefixes that build the verb, and vocabulary that shares no roots with English, its loanwords coming from Arabic and French. In return, very few foreigners learn this language, and a single well delivered Bariza asubuhi lands immediately.

C

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
