Comorian (Shingazidja, Shimaore, Shimwali, Shindzuani depending on the island) is spoken by approximately 900,000 people in the Comoros and Mayotte, and by a large diaspora in France, particularly in Marseille and the Paris region. A Bantu language with strong Arabic and Swahili influences, it is written in Latin and Ajami (Arabic) scripts. Its taarab music and poetry are at the heart of Comorian culture.
