A family language

Reconnect with German

The language of your parents, your grandparents or your partner. The one you want to pass on to your children.

A couple hugging on a terrace
Speaking the language of the country means reconnecting with its people.
A mother and her daughter sitting on a rug
Now, at home, we speak German.
A young woman smiles on the phone
“Hi Mum, I speak German!”
A father holds his daughter close
Children who speak German are the greatest cultural wealth you can bring to your family.
A grandmother and her granddaughter in the kitchen
Your grandparents’ German should not end with them.
  • Finally understand what is said at the table, and answer back.
  • Your in-laws speak German to you. Answer them in German.

A language is passed down from generation to generation. Now it is your turn.

The platform

Progress in German between classes, at your own pace

Interactive lessons with native audio, vocabulary, dialogues and quizzes. Everything you need to reinforce your skills between live sessions.

The platform

Between classes, you move forward twenty minutes a day

Lessons follow one another in order, with no evening to set aside. Every word is recorded by a native speaker.

  • 303 lessons across 57 modules, from beginner to advanced
  • Native audio on every word, with a slow-down button
  • Your progress is kept, on phone and on computer alike
Audio

You hear the language as it is actually spoken

The recordings are made by native speakers, not by a synthetic voice. The slow-down button separates the sounds when it goes too fast.

  • Every sentence can be played and slowed down
  • The transcription and translation sit under the audio
  • You replay it as many times as you need, with no limit
Quizzes

Every module ends with a quiz, not with a ticked box

You are corrected on the spot, with the explanation. A failed quiz can be retaken, with no penalty and no record.

  • Immediate correction, with the right answer explained
  • An end-of-level test opens the next level
  • A level certificate at the end of the course
Level certificate

Your German level, certified in your name

  • Issued once you have passed every lesson of a level: beginner, intermediate or advanced
  • Downloadable as a PDF and shareable on LinkedIn
  • A unique number, verifiable online on targumi.com
  • Included in the plans with live classes, from the first payment: it is not issued during the trial

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning German

German is rated level 3 out of 5 in difficulty for English speakers (similar to Polish, more accessible than Arabic or Japanese). The 4 grammatical cases (Nominative, Accusative, Dative, Genitive) and 3 genders (der/die/das) are the main challenges. But German grammar is regular and logical, with far fewer exceptions than English. Our teachers introduce cases through everyday situations and real-life contexts, not abstract tables.
Germany is the world's 3rd largest economy and Europe's top exporter. Speaking German gives a major competitive advantage in engineering, the automotive industry (BMW, Mercedes, Volkswagen, Audi), finance (Deutsche Bank), scientific research and chemistry (BASF, Bayer). More than 18% of the world's scientific papers are published in German. Knowing German also makes it easier to learn Dutch, Swedish and other Scandinavian languages.
Yes. We offer complete preparation for Goethe-Zertifikat certifications (A1 to C2), the world standard for German, as well as TestDaF for university studies in Germany. Our teachers know the exact exam format, written production, listening comprehension, speaking and interaction, and train you on exercises from previous exams. Goethe B2 is often required for positions in German or Austrian companies.
Standard German (Hochdeutsch) is taught in schools and used in the media across all 3 countries. But regional variants can be surprising: Austrian German has its own vocabulary ('Erdapfel' for potato, 'Semmel' for a bread roll), and Swiss German (Schweizerdeutsch) is so distinct in pronunciation that a German speaker may find it incomprehensible. At Targumi, we teach Hochdeutsch while preparing you to understand regional variants.
The honest truth: there is no universal rule for genders in German. But there are very reliable indicators: words ending in '-ung' are always feminine (die Wohnung, die Meinung), those in '-chen' are always neuter (das Madchen), and days, months and seasons are masculine (der Montag, der Januar). Our teachers systematically teach every word with its article, 'die Wohnung', never 'Wohnung' alone, to build reflexes from the very start.
The DACH region (Germany, Austria, Switzerland) has 100 million speakers and a combined GDP of over 5 trillion euros. German is also the 2nd most used language in European businesses after English. In Switzerland, job listings in finance, pharma and tech often require German. And in Central Europe (Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary), German remains the language of business in many industrial sectors.
For an English speaker, reaching a conversational B1 level in German takes around 8 to 12 months with regular classes. Declensions and genders take time, but the grammar is very regular once the foundations are in place. At Targumi, native teachers introduce cases through real-life situations and you start speaking German from your very first class in small groups.
The basics of vocabulary and grammar are accessible self-taught, but correct pronunciation, declensions in context and spoken fluency require human guidance. Self-taught learners often end up with rigid, textbook-style German. At Targumi, our native teachers teach you living German, the kind actually spoken in Berlin, Vienna or Zurich, with real-time corrections.
One plan, Full access, gives you every language, live small-group classes with native teachers, interactive lessons and the community: $8.50 instead of $17 a week, $24.50 instead of $49 a month or $49.50 instead of $99 a quarter, after a 7-day free trial. How the 7-day trial works

  1. You choose your plan and register a payment method. Nothing is charged today: $0.

  2. For 7 days, you have all of Targumi: every language, live classes, replays and the discussion groups.

  3. The date and amount of the first charge are shown in your trial confirmation email and in "My subscription".

  4. You cancel in 1 click from "My subscription", at any time before the trial ends: no charge. Otherwise, your plan starts at the end of the 7 days, at the price shown.

One trial per account. If you have already had a trial, your subscription starts on the day you order.
