A smiling grandmother holds a baby in her arms
A family language

Reconnect with Hausa

The language of your parents, your grandparents or your partner. The one you want to pass on to your children.

A couple laughing, she hugs him from behind
Speaking the language of the country means reconnecting with its people.
A mother smiles at the little girl in her arms
Now, at home, we speak Hausa.
A young woman smiles, phone in hand
“Hi Mum, I speak Hausa!”
A father in white attire holds his son by the sea
Children who speak Hausa are the greatest cultural wealth you can bring to your family.
A grandmother in a yellow headscarf holds a young child close
Your grandparents’ Hausa should not end with them.
  • Finally understand what is said at the table, and answer back.
  • Your in-laws speak Hausa to you. Answer them in Hausa.

A language is passed down from generation to generation. Now it is your turn.

The platform

Progress in Hausa between classes, at your own pace

Interactive lessons with native audio, vocabulary, dialogues and quizzes. Everything you need to reinforce your skills between live sessions.

The platform

Between classes, you move forward twenty minutes a day

Lessons follow one another in order, with no evening to set aside. Every word is recorded by a native speaker.

  • 303 lessons across 51 modules, from beginner to advanced
  • Native audio on every word, with a slow-down button
  • Your progress is kept, on phone and on computer alike
Audio

You hear the language as it is actually spoken

The recordings are made by native speakers, not by a synthetic voice. The slow-down button separates the sounds when it goes too fast.

  • Every sentence can be played and slowed down
  • The transcription and translation sit under the audio
  • You replay it as many times as you need, with no limit
Quizzes

Every module ends with a quiz, not with a ticked box

You are corrected on the spot, with the explanation. A failed quiz can be retaken, with no penalty and no record.

  • Immediate correction, with the right answer explained
  • An end-of-level test opens the next level
  • A level certificate at the end of the course
Level certificate

Your Hausa level, certified in your name

  • Issued once you have passed every lesson of a level: beginner, intermediate or advanced
  • Downloadable as a PDF and shareable on LinkedIn
  • A unique number, verifiable online on targumi.com
  • Included in the plans with live classes, from the first payment: it is not issued during the trial

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Hausa

Hausa and Kiswahili are the two great cross-regional languages of sub-Saharan Africa. Hausa dominates West Africa (Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Ghana, Cameroon), Kiswahili dominates East Africa. With Nigeria as Africa's largest economy, Hausa opens the door to the continent's biggest and most dynamic market. For business in West Africa, Hausa is an incomparable asset.
Hausa is a tonal language with two main tones (high and low), plus a falling contour tone. It is less complex than Mandarin (four tones) or Vietnamese (six tones). Tones distinguish words that are identical in writing: 'yârà' (children) vs 'yàrà' (easy). With a native teacher correcting tones from the start, the right reflexes develop gradually over 2 to 3 months.
Absolutely. Hausa is spoken in eight countries: Nigeria, Niger, Chad, Ghana, Cameroon, Benin, Togo and Sudan. It is the language of commerce in markets throughout West Africa. BBC Hausa and RFI Hausa broadcasts reach tens of millions of listeners every week across the Sahel. For NGOs, diplomats and entrepreneurs working in the region, Hausa is often more useful than French or English.
The Nigerian community in France is estimated at 60,000 people, with a strong Hausa presence. More significantly: hundreds of thousands of nationals from Niger, Chad and Cameroon speak Hausa in Europe. In certain neighbourhoods of Paris and Lyon, Hausa is a language of commerce. For social workers and healthcare professionals, learning Hausa is a real advantage.
For a French or English speaker, 8 to 12 months with regular lessons to reach B1. The Latin alphabet used for Hausa makes the start easier, no new script to learn for everyday communication. The main challenges: the tones, grammatical gender (masculine/feminine) and aspect-based verb constructions. But core vocabulary is attainable quickly with regular oral practice.
