Learn Éwé with real humans

Éwé is a language spoken by native communities worldwide. Ewe (Eʋegbe) is a Niger-Congo language of the Gbe family spoken by around 7 million people in southern Togo, southeastern Ghana (Volta Region), and to a lesser extent in southwestern Benin. It is one of Togo's national languages alongside Kabiye, and one of Ghana's main languages. A tonal language with a rich musical register, Ewe carries a deep oral literature (proverbs, tales, songs) and a Vodun (Voodoo) religious tradition that spread to the Caribbean through the Atlantic slave trade. Learning Ewe means stepping into the culture of the Ewe people, opening a window onto the historical Slave Coast, and getting closer to Beninese Fon and other neighbouring Gbe languages (Gen, Aja).

Did you know? Ewe is a tonal language with three main tones (high, low, mid) that can change the meaning of a word. Ewe culture is famous for its talking drums (atumpan, gankogui), its dances (agbadza, gahu), and Vodun , the traditional religion that gave rise to Haitian and Cuban Voodoo through the slave trade. The Ewe proverb 'Du nyo wu hoehoe' (community is better than solitary wealth) sums up a worldview rooted in solidarity. The town of Ouidah in Benin and the port of Lomé in Togo are powerful sites of memory for slavery and the Afro-Atlantic diaspora.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Éwé

Ewe has three main tones (high, low, mid). It's less complex than Mandarin (4 tones) or Vietnamese (6 tones), but tones are essential , they distinguish words spelled the same way. With a native teacher correcting tones in real time, your ear adapts progressively. Many learners reach solid tonal control within 3 to 4 months.
Ewe and Fon both belong to the Gbe family and are partially mutually intelligible. Fon is spoken in Benin (Abomey, Cotonou), while Ewe is spoken in Togo and southeastern Ghana. Both languages share a substantial portion of vocabulary and grammatical structures, but pronunciation and some everyday words differ. Learning one gives you a strong head start in the other.
Ewe uses an extended Latin alphabet with a few specific characters (ɖ, ɛ, ƒ, ɣ, ŋ, ɔ, ʋ) and diacritics for tones. Spelling was standardised in the 20th century. For English speakers, reading Ewe becomes quick once these letters are mastered , pronunciation remains highly regular.
Yes. The Togolese community in France numbers around 60,000, mainly in the Paris region, the Grand Est and Rhône-Alpes. The Ghanaian diaspora in France is smaller but active in commerce and music. Germany also hosts a significant Togolese diaspora. Speaking a few words of Ewe instantly creates a warm connection with these communities.
For an English speaker, count on 8 to 12 months with 2 lessons per week to reach B1. The main challenges are tones, vocabulary without common roots with European languages, and vowel harmony. The upside: a Latin alphabet (with a few extra letters), logical grammar, and no grammatical cases. Oral progress comes fast with regular practice.

C

Been on Targumi for 3 months. The small group format is exactly what I needed. My teacher takes time to correct accent, it's precious. Made more progress in 3 months than in 2 years of regular apps.

What sold me is you actually speak from class one. No 10 hours of theory before opening your mouth. And the platform between classes is well-built, I revise on the morning commute.

Honestly I had doubts at first because I'd tried plenty of methods without sticking. This is different, the teacher knows their stuff, adapts to your level, and we have fun on top of it. 6 months in and still motivated.

Really good experience overall, the rhythm between live classes and independent practice is well-balanced. Small note: the mobile app lags sometimes, but the teaching content is well worth the price.

The thing that makes a real difference compared to other platforms: teachers are native and trained. You feel it, especially on accent and everyday expressions you don't learn in textbooks.
