Éwé is a language spoken by native communities worldwide. Ewe (Eʋegbe) is a Niger-Congo language of the Gbe family spoken by around 7 million people in southern Togo, southeastern Ghana (Volta Region), and to a lesser extent in southwestern Benin. It is one of Togo's national languages alongside Kabiye, and one of Ghana's main languages. A tonal language with a rich musical register, Ewe carries a deep oral literature (proverbs, tales, songs) and a Vodun (Voodoo) religious tradition that spread to the Caribbean through the Atlantic slave trade. Learning Ewe means stepping into the culture of the Ewe people, opening a window onto the historical Slave Coast, and getting closer to Beninese Fon and other neighbouring Gbe languages (Gen, Aja).
