Did you know? Khmer has a fascinating feature: it is one of the very few Southeast Asian languages that is not tonal. Unlike Thai, Vietnamese or Lao, Khmer does not change word meaning based on pitch, a huge advantage for European learners. The Khmer alphabet, derived from Brahmi script from India, has been in use since the 6th century, the inscriptions from the Angkor era (9th-14th centuries) are its most spectacular examples. The resilience of the language after the Khmer Rouge genocide (1975-1979, which killed more than a third of the population) stands as one of the most powerful testimonies to human cultural resistance.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions about learning Khmer

Yes, and it is a major advantage. There is no need to master 4 or 5 tones like in Thai or Vietnamese. Word meaning does not change with pitch. That said, Khmer has its own system of registers (vowels pronounced differently depending on the surrounding consonant class) which can be confusing. But for Europeans accustomed to non-tonal languages, Khmer is acoustically more accessible than its neighbours.
No, you can start with Latin transliteration. But learning the Khmer alphabet (about 3 to 4 months for fluent reading) opens up huge possibilities, reading menus, signs, messages, and gives you a much better grasp of the language. The Khmer alphabet has an internal logic: consonants are grouped into two 'registers' that influence vowel pronunciation. Complex but elegant.
Cambodia is one of the most dynamic economies in Southeast Asia, with annual growth of 6 to 7% before the pandemic. Key sectors: tourism (Angkor Wat welcomes 2 million visitors a year), textiles (massive exports), real estate and construction, and agriculture. Phnom Penh increasingly attracts NGOs, entrepreneurs and expatriates. Speaking Khmer in this context is extremely valued and sets serious professionals apart.
Yes, Cambodia was a French protectorate from 1863 to 1953 and is a member of the OIF (International Organisation of La Francophonie). French is still taught in some Cambodian schools and institutions. The Cambodian community in France (estimated at 80,000 to 100,000 people, mainly in Paris, Toulouse and Val-de-Marne) descends from refugees of the 1975-1979 era. For French nationals of Cambodian origin, learning Khmer is often a deep journey of reconnecting with identity.
Without the alphabet (using transliteration), a basic conversational level is achievable in 4 to 6 months with two lessons per week, the fact that Khmer is non-tonal helps a lot. With the alphabet, expect 8 to 12 months for comfortable conversational fluency. Khmer politeness formulas matter a great deal, they change according to the social status of the person you are speaking to. Our teachers guide you in choosing the appropriate register for each of your target situations.
