Japanese is one of the most fascinating languages you can learn. Spoken by 125 million people, it opens doors to one of the world's largest economies, a rich cultural heritage, and some of the most influential media and technology on the planet.
The FSI estimates 2,200 hours to professional proficiency. But conversational ability comes much sooner, and the journey itself is deeply rewarding.

The Three Writing Systems
Japanese uses three scripts simultaneously. Each serves a distinct purpose.
Hiragana
Hiragana is the foundational script with 46 basic characters, each representing a syllable. Learn hiragana first - most learners can memorize all 46 characters in 1-2 weeks.
Katakana
Katakana has the same 46 sounds but different shapes. It is used for foreign loanwords: コーヒー (koohii, coffee), テレビ (terebi, television).
Kanji
Kanji are Chinese characters adapted for Japanese. There are approximately 2,136 everyday use kanji. Start with the most common 100-200 and build gradually.

Japanese Pronunciation
Japanese pronunciation is surprisingly accessible:
- Only 5 vowels: a (ah), i (ee), u (oo), e (eh), o (oh)
- No tones unlike Chinese or Vietnamese
- Consistent pronunciation: each character always sounds the same
- No consonant clusters: syllables follow a simple consonant-vowel pattern

Learning Strategy
Month 1-2: Master hiragana and katakana. Learn basic greetings. Month 3-4: Build core vocabulary (500-800 words). Learn present and past tense. Month 5-6: Start reading simple texts. Begin kanji study systematically. Key principle: Consistency beats intensity. 30 minutes every day is far more effective than 3 hours once a week.At Targumi, you can connect with native Japanese tutors who will guide you through every stage, from your first hiragana to confident conversation.
